Down-riggers allow you to get your bait and lures to the correct trolling depth, when the fish strikes  your line is released from the down-rigger and the ball weight can be retracted electrically or manually depending on the unit purchased.  Electric down-riggers are preferred when fishing in deep water. The electric motor does the work of hauling up the weight often 8 to 15 lbs from 100ft, 200ft or 300ft in some cases. Down-riggers can easily be fitted to most fishing boats.
